If you want to succeed at social marketing, you have to tell a story. That’s why brands that tell the most compelling stories do the best job of connecting with their audience.
With that in mind, we wanted to share a bit of JumpCrew’s story with you, so I sat down with our Director of Social Media Jason Yarborough, and picked his brain about everything from his favorite ice cream to what he does every day at JumpCrew.
JumpCrew: Jason, thanks for stopping by to answer a few questions for us on the JumpSocial blog. Could you tell me more about your role at JumpCrew?
Hey, Melissa. Thanks for having me!
As Director of Social, I manage the account managers who work directly with our clients to help grow their brands. I also manage all of our JumpCrew accounts on social media.
JumpCrew: As Director of Social Media, you work with local businesses a lot, but have you ever worked for a local business?
In college, I worked for golf courses and a smoothie shop. I’ve been a server. Once, I even worked for a friend’s gas station.
JumpCrew: Do you have a current favorite local business?
JumpCrew: If you could be doing anything right now what would it be?
JumpCrew: This is not surprising. In that vein, what’s one thing you have on your desk that people might be surprised by?
JumpCrew: That’s interesting. Why exactly do you have Play-Doh on your desk?
Because it’s a conversation starter. Everyone always wants to know why it’s there. It warms the room and makes it easier to talk about whatever we need to discuss.
JumpCrew: Speaking of creativity and starting conversations, you’ve done a lot of that before coming to JumpCrew. Can you tell us about some of those experiences?
Sure. For the past six years, I’ve been a social media consultant. I’ve worked with numerous agencies, brands, and local businesses.
For three years, I managed Social Fresh, the longest running social media conference of its kind. The conference drew some huge brands, and we had speakers from top platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
JumpCrew: How did you find your way to JumpCrew?
Well, I was looking to make a move. I wanted to work with a company that was building something of value.
I’ve known Rob for quite a while, and when he pitched me on JumpCrew’s mission to help local businesses, I was intrigued. The more I learned, the more I wanted to know. I loved the idea of building a social media management company that would bring real value to local businesses.
JumpCrew: What does a typical day in the office look like for you?
Lots of meetings, mostly.
JumpCrew: What do you meet about?
I meet with my team regularly to better understand the content they’re creating and to see what’s working and what’s not. We’re always optimizing the content we’re creating, and these meetings ensure we keep getting the best results for our clients.
I also spend time working on building out processes and procedures for my department. In the midst of that, I’m also creating content for our social media, like videos, webinars, and a variety of other pieces.
JumpCrew: If you could only give one piece of advice to local business owner about social media, what would it be?
Know your audience, and keep things fun for them — just like you would in your place of business.
